Nvidia was originally founded in 1933 in San Jose, California, as a developer and manufacturer of computer graphics cards. Nvidia also eagerly partners with device makers, such as launching over two dozen new microservices specifically for the healthcare sector.

AI is being implemented in two primary ways: to aid healthcare providers in their decision-making and to reduce their workload. An example of the former is emergency services, where split-second choices can be the difference between life and death. Corti, a Danish startup, has developed a speech recognition software program based on Nvidia’s Jetson architecture that can detect if a caller is experiencing cardiac arrest. For the latter, AI’s capacity for speech recognition makes it a popular choice for recording provider-patient conversations to automatically fill out electronic health records.

Imaging

One area that is already seeing AI’s impact is the field of imaging and diagnosis. By training AI on thousands of images of a visual symptom, such as colorectal lesions that healthcare providers have already verified, the AI can be used to detect said symptoms that might go unnoticed. This technology has applications for everything ranging from early cancer diagnosis to analyzing a patient’s blood vessels for early warnings of health complications.

Accessibility

AI-powered technology is being implemented to help people with disabilities enjoy greater independence. The company Aira, a member of Nvidia’s Inception program, uses AI-powered smart glasses to read labels for those with impaired vision. GPUs and deep learning can also be used to create hearing aids that automatically filter out background noise, making it easier to listen to what actually matters.
